Consumer Publications

I produced feature stories, many of them cover stories, for Parade, when this Sunday supplement appeared in hundreds of newspapers across the United States and was, I believe, the highest-volume periodical publication in America. Here are three I hope you will find interesting.

"To Cherish Life," my Parade cover story on Centenarians, was extremely popular. I received letters and inquiries about it literally for years afterwards. Researching this story took me all over the country, including a trip to the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana to interview a former chief of the tribe, who passed away shortly afterwards.

Those interviewed for "Could You Run a Business With Your Spouse?" included power couples Melvin and Ellen Gordon of Illinois-based Tootsie Roll and Debbi and Randy Fields of Utah's Mrs. Fields Cookies.

One of my favorite Parade cover stories was "Secrets of Success After 60," about entrepreneurs founding companies after their hair turned gray - something we would like to see supported much more strongly today. Featured founders included Tom Duck of then-wildly-successful Ugly Duckling Rent-A-Car System of Tucson and Chicago restaurateur Richard Victor, one of Oprah Winfrey's original television producers.

I've been a contributor to many publications linked to prominent nonprofits. This story, "Home, Sweet, Office," which appeared in American Legion, was among the first major pieces on telecommuting - then a new and unusual manner of employment.

I've included this short article, "Stop Procrastinating (Right After You Read This)," as an example of my work for custom publications, which are on-assignment magazines produced for a particular business customer. This story was among those I produced for Living Smart, a custom publication commissioned by Age Wave of California.
