Engineering and Science

Articles on engineering and science topics make up a major portion of my journalistic portfolio. I've written hundreds of such stories and have been a contributing editor at several major "Trade" magazines for engineers and scientists. Here are a few of them.

"Making Safety Part of the Process," from Mechanical Engineering, provides a good illustration of my ability to research and write complicated multisource stories about manufacturing processes. I visited a number of plants and engineering offices for this article and interviewed top engineers at major companies, including Stone & Webster, Arco, Asarco, Allegheny Ludlum, and Olin. I was a contributing editor at Mechanical Engineering in New York, the official magazine of ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

For a number of years, I was not only a contributing editor, but also possibly the highest-volume contributor at Graduating Engineer at Peterson Publications in Los Angeles. This story, "Engineers in Hot Spots," was chosen for the Portfolio because it is still as relevant as ever - maybe moreso than when it was orginally written. (Note that Graduating Engineer, since sold to another company, no longer is geared to all engineers, but focuses on computer engineers only.)

I was also with Chemical Engineering, at McGraw-Hill in New York, for a number of years. In fact, I was the sole contributing editor on staff, the only regular contributor not in-house. I generally did at least one article per issue, for a variety of regular sections, especially the Profile section, which highlighted the careers of some extraordinary engineers and scientists around the country and around the world. (I may add an entire section of these Profiles to the Portfolio at a later date.) The above story, however, is a concise - and still very relevant - story on the multidecade phaseout of chlorofluorocarbons, which many readers may find interesting.
